Virginia to expand Medicaid to provide dental benefits to adults

10/22/2021

Health Care for All WV created a resource to help WV residents with Medicaid access the new dental benefits. According to The National Institute for Health Care Management, dental care is a crucial part of physical health. Untreated gum disease can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and strokes. Many Americans lack access to affordable dental care and thus these issues go untreated. Learn more at

Part of the solution that HCFAWV has helped with setting in motion, is the passing of an expansion of Medicaid to cover $1000 a year in preventative dental care. They are hoping to expand the amount covered to keep our fellow West Virginians healthy and smiling.

Unfortunately, there previously hasnt been an easily accessible source of information about which dental offices in West Virginia are accepting new patients, and many book several months in advance. Health Care for All WV just finished a comprehensive list of every dentist in WV who is accepting this extended plan. It also includes the offices that only accept Medicaid for children to free up spaces for adults at the offices that accept the adult plan. All info to the offices including name, location, phone number, and any additional notes are now available through a specially created

Preventive Dental Care In Woodbridge Alexandria And Fairfax Va

Brushing and flossing are the fundamentals of a healthy mouth and body. When done right, these tools, along with regular dental checkups at our Woodbridge, Fairfax, or Alexandria dental offices, can help prevent cavities, gum disease, and halitosis . Here are a few simple ways that you can prevent the build-up of plaque and cavities:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Use fluoride toothpaste to remove food particles and plaque from the tooth surfaces. Also be sure to brush the top surface of your tongue this will remove any extra plaque-causing food particles, and help keep your breath fresh!
  • Clean between your teeth by flossing at least once a day. You can also use a mouthwash to help kill bacteria and freshen your breath. Decay-causing bacteria can linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. Floss and mouthwash will help remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.
  • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gum.

    How Does It Work

You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move little by little, week by week until they have straightened to their final positions. You’ll visit our Woodbridge, Fairfax, or Alexandria dental offices every four to eight weeks so Dr. Tavakkoli can ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages about one year, but will vary from case to case.

To prevent teeth from moving after the active phase of Invisalign is complete, you will need to wear a retainer. We offer both fixed and removable retainers depending on your preference.

At Nova Dental Partners, we take great care to make sure that Invisalign is the right choice. We design each case in a way that will achieve the best results, and we will work with you until your smile goals are achieved.

To learn more about Invisalign, give us a call or schedule your appointment online!

Virginia Is Offering Dental Benefits To All Adults On Medicaid For The First Time

RICHMOND, Va. For the first time, thousands of low-income adults on Medicaid in Virginia are eligible for comprehensive dental benefits.

The new policy officially took effect on July 1, 2021.

The Virginia General Assembly initially allocated funding for the expansion in the 2020 session but the change was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since it was authorized in the two-year state budget, lawmakers will have to allocate more funding in the future to maintain this level of coverage.

However, advocates believe this is the start of a permanent shift.

Once youve enabled access to comprehensive healthcare its pretty difficult to suddenly not prioritize that care, said Virginia Health Catalyst CEO Sarah Holland. This is a game changer.

Holland has been pushing for the expansion for at least a decade. She said Virginia is the 20th state to take this step.

Several years ago this was seen as a luxury, Holland said. But people die of dental disease all of the time. Often it is coded as something else.

Dr. Tegwyn Brickhouse, chair of VCUs Department of Dental Public Health and Policy, explained oral health is inseparable from overall health.

It can help control chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. We also know theres a link between oral health and pre-term birth, Brickhouse said.

Those looking to make an appointment should identify themselves as a Medicaid recipient and make sure the practice accepts Medicaid before booking.

Woodbridge Alexandria And Fairfax Va Dental Implants

People are living longer than ever, and while regular brushing, flossing, and checkups allow many of us to maintain our natural smiles for a lifetime, sometimes our teeth just can’t keep up. If you’ve lost a tooth due to injury or disease, dental implants can rejuvenate both your smile and your oral health.

An implant is a synthetic tooth root in the shape of a post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. The root is usually made of titanium: the same material used in many replacement hips and knees, and a metal that is well-suited to pairing with human bone. A replacement tooth is then fixed to the post. The tooth can be either permanently attached or removable. Permanent teeth are more stable and feel more like natural teeth.

The ideal candidate for implants is a non-smoker who has good oral health, including a sufficient amount of bone in the jaw, and healthy gums with no sign of gum disease.

If you are missing several teeth in a row, a few strategically placed implants can support a permanent bridge . Similarly, if you have lost all of your teeth, a full bridge or full denture can be permanently fixed in your mouth with a strategic number of implants.

Virginia Aims To Expand Medicaid Dental Care Access By Increasing Provider Pay

RICHMOND, Va. -State lawmakers are taking steps to expand access to dental care for low-income Virginians.

Last summer, the states Medicaid program began offering dental care to nearly one million adult members. Following the massive expansion, Virginia is increasing pay for providers for the first time in more than a decade in hopes of expanding access to care.

Dr. Randy Adams, a pediatric dentist in Richmond, said it currently takes roughly a month to get an appointment but hes hoping to see that delay drop if more providers sign up to take on Medicaid patients.

It matters because dental care is a part of overall health, Adams said.

State data shows the number of dentists accepting Medicaid patients has fluctuated over the last ten years but, over the last five years, numbers have generally dropped. The total has decreased by 137 providers since the 2017 peak of 2,031, according to the Virginia Department of Medicaid Assistance Services.

After the state expanded adult dental benefits in 2021, former Governor Ralph Northam wrote a letter to 3,900 Virginia Dental Association members asking them to accept patients. DMAS says only five more providers started accepting Medicaid since then.

Adams said dentists were losing money on services because reimbursement rates were so low. As of July 1, Virginia increased how much dentists get paid by 30 percent.
